UPDATED PREVIEW · AUGUST 31, 2026

What I am watching after USA's late roster change

USA opens against China on September 4.

USA is still the favorite, but this is no longer the same twelve-player team that was announced in August. Losing A’ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum removes an elite interior anchor and a veteran pressure guard just days before tipoff. Adding Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron keeps the talent level high, but it makes chemistry, role clarity and adjustment time even more important.

01THE ROSTER CHANGE

Two stars out, two Mystics in

USA Basketball announced that Wilson and Plum will miss the World Cup for health reasons. Plum's calf has not fully healed, while Wilson is taking needed recovery time after a heavy WNBA workload. Washington teammates Iriafen and Citron step into the twelve-player group together.

The names still scream favorite. The question is how quickly a changed roster can sound like one team.
02THE BACKCOURT

Citron changes the guard puzzle

Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers arrive for their first World Cup alongside Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young and Rhyne Howard. Citron adds another versatile guard and wing who can defend, move without the ball and play within lineups that do not require every touch to run through her.

Without Plum's downhill pressure, USA may lean even more on pace, spacing and multiple playmakers sharing creation.
03THE FRONTCOURT

Wilson's absence reshapes the paint

Wilson was the 2022 World Cup MVP and the most outstanding player of the Paris 2024 Olympics. Her absence changes both ends of the floor. Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Aliyah Boston and Angel Reese now carry more of the interior burden, while Iriafen gives USA another athletic forward who already has experience with this year's national-team program.

Watch who closes games at the five, who protects the rim and whether USA can still dominate the glass without Wilson.
04THE GROUP

First place is worth more than bragging rights

The winner of each group moves directly to the quarterfinals. Second and third place teams have to play an extra qualification game. That makes the three Group D games more than a warm up. USA has the depth to survive an extra game, but there is no reason to volunteer for one.

The clean path is simple: win Group D, rest, then make somebody else survive the extra round.
05GROUP D SWING GAME

China and Italy could decide the shape of the group

FIBA has circled China against Italy as the pivotal game behind USA. China has the interior size. Italy returns to the World Cup after a 32 year wait and arrives with confidence from its EuroBasket bronze. Czechia enters with injury concerns, which makes every result in the middle of the table matter even more.

USA should control the top of Group D. China and Italy may decide who gets the better road behind them.
06MEDAL RADAR

The real pressure is waiting outside Group D

FIBA's newest power ranking has USA first, France second, Australia third, Spain fourth and Belgium fifth. France came within one possession of taking Olympic gold in Paris. Australia has experience and size. Belgium can carve teams apart with passing. Spain has a path that could build confidence before the medal rounds.

USA remains the favorite, but removing two experienced Olympic guards and forwards from the original roster makes the medal rounds less automatic than they looked a day ago.
