NEXT STOP · LOS ANGELES 2028

Home court, historic pressure.

The United States will arrive in Los Angeles carrying an eight Games gold medal streak and a standard that leaves no room for ordinary. Kara Lawson leads the 2025–28 national team cycle as USA Basketball builds toward a roster that can defend the crown on home soil.

Heating the official Olympic numbers…

USA OLYMPIC LEDGER

A medal every time the USA has played.

The women’s program earned silver in its 1976 Olympic debut, then built the most dominant sustained run in international team basketball.

THE EIGHT GOLD RUN

Atlanta started it. Paris stretched it.

Every generation has changed the personnel, but the ending has stayed the same since 1996.

1996 · 2000Atlanta to Sydney

The modern streak begins at home, then survives its first handoff four years later.

2004 · 2008Athens to Beijing

Back to back titles turn a run into the program’s defining expectation.

2012 · 2016London to Rio

Veteran continuity and overwhelming depth keep the gold medal standard intact.

2020 · 2024Tokyo to Paris

A delayed Games and a one point final both end with the United States on top.

WHAT DEFINES AN OLYMPIC ROSTER

Twelve spots, no easy decisions.

WNBA excellence matters, but selection also rewards international experience, positional balance, defensive flexibility and players who can thrive without controlling every possession.

THE 5 ON 5 JOB

Build a complete twelve, not an All Star ballot.

The best Olympic roster needs creation, shooting, rebounding, rim protection and switchable defense. Fit matters because minutes and touches shrink when twelve elite players share one team.

  • International rules and spacing change the reads.
  • Continuity from camps and prior events can break close calls.
  • Every player must add value in a smaller role.
THE PRESSURE

Gold is the baseline, not the bonus.

Paris showed how thin the margin can become. France pushed the 2024 final to the last possession before USA escaped 67–66, a reminder that history does not defend a pick and roll.

  • The world’s guard play keeps improving.
  • Short tournaments punish one cold shooting night.
  • Late game lineups need answers on both ends.
THE NEXT CYCLE

Lawson has the runway to evaluate.

USA Basketball named Kara Lawson head coach through 2028. World Cup play, national team camps and the qualification calendar all feed the decisions that become the Los Angeles roster.

THE OTHER OLYMPIC GAME

3x3 has its own roster and rhythm.

Olympic 3x3 is not a shortened 5x5 event. Four player rosters, a halfcourt, a 12 second shot clock and a separate qualification system make it a different national team discipline.
