THE STORY BEHIND THE SITE

ABOUT
WE KNOW THE W

The numbers. The history. The people who make the game matter.

MEET THE CREATOR

I’m Shakeema Funchess.
You can call me Shak.

I’m an author, educator, creative learning facilitator, and doctoral student in education with a focus on social-emotional learning. Through Adventures in Zen, my work centers representation, belonging, and making room for people to see themselves in a story.

We Know the W brings that same attention to women’s basketball. I built this space to connect the parts of the game that too often live in separate places: a player’s numbers, her team’s history, the culture around the court, and the life she is building beyond basketball.

I wanted a place where following a question could become a whole afternoon of discovery. Start with a box score, meet a player, trace a franchise, learn a play, and find the women who made today’s game possible. That curiosity is the heart of We Know the W.

WHO THIS SPACE SERVES

There’s room for you here.

We Know the W is for longtime fans, first-time viewers, students, educators, writers, and curious people who want to understand more than the final score. You do not need to know every roster or remember every championship to belong here. Bring your questions. The basketball vocabulary can come with time.

From Live Stats and The Stat Kitchen to The W Vault, The Film Room, and Herstory, the goal is to make research feel connected and learning feel inviting.

EDITORIAL PHILOSOPHY

Bring receipts. Keep the humanity.

Facts deserve a source.

Our standard is to ground factual coverage in identifiable sources, prioritize primary records where available, and distinguish confirmed information from reports or uncertainty. Automated feeds can lag or conflict. Missing data should not be presented as zero.

Opinion should own its perspective.

Rankings, grades, Starting Five selections, Bench Mob rotations, and Snack Shak commentary reflect this site’s editorial judgment. They are not official league awards. Evaluations should explain their criteria and distinguish career achievement from a single season.

Players are people.

We aim to discuss performance honestly without reducing athletes to a stat line, a rumor, or a stereotype. Identity, community, education, and life beyond the court deserve thoughtful coverage alongside basketball.

History belongs in the conversation.

Current stars do not exist in a vacuum. We connect today’s game to retired players, earlier teams, and the women who expanded what professional basketball could be. Comparisons across eras should acknowledge differences in opportunity and context.

Corrections make the work stronger.

Readers can flag inaccurate statistics, broken links, missing images, accessibility barriers, or other problems by emailing books@adventuresinzen.com. Reports are reviewed against available evidence; substantive editorial corrections should be clearly identified in the affected story.

Credit and transparency matter.

Sources and image credits belong with the work they support. Any sponsored coverage should be labeled, and any AI-generated illustration should be identified as such. Illustrations must not be presented as documentary photographs of real events.
